BeejiveIM v1.0 | Published by Beejive, Inc. | Via App Store | $15.99 | Released: 9-26-08

Overview

BeejiveIM is yet another entrant to the world of instant messaging on the iPhone. It’s pretty crowded in there with apps like Palringo, AIM, fring, WebMessenger, MobileChat… you get the picture. So how is BeejiveIM different? Well, it continues running even after you’ve exited the app, sending you push notifications of new chat messages via your push email account. That one feature may entice many to take the $16 plunge.

Functionality

BeejiveIM is an attractive app. It is clean and well-designed. There’s nothing to its functionality that is confusing or unintuitive. You can jump in and begin using it almost immediately, if you’re familiar with chat apps. If not…

Trip Cubby • Mileage Log v1.1.1 | Published by The Application Cubby LLC | Via App Store | $9.99 | Released: 8-14-08

Overview

After our review of Milebug, the good folks over at App Cubby requested that we look into their take on mileage logging: Trip Cubby. It’s a direct competitor to Milebug, and after using it, I can see why they were so eager to have it reviewed. It’s very well designed and has some great features.

Functionality

Everything you see on the main screen of the app when you start up is essentially the trip list. As you add trips, this screen will obviously fill up. Then the buttons on the bottom of the screen become sorting buttons - meaning you can sort your trip view by All, Paid, or Unpaid. The Paid/Unpaid buttons reflect whether or not you’ve already been reimbursed for your trip.

You won’t see how full-featured this app is until you click the “+” button to add your first trip. Then it becomes apparent how much thought has been put into Trip Cubby. Where Milebug has “Presets,” TB offers you a “Frequent Trips” field. Selecting that option allows you to choose from previous trips or add new trips.  Continue Reading

Review: PdaNet (Look Ma’ No Proxy!)

PdaNet 1.31 | Published by June Fabrics | Via Cydia | Free | Released: 10-1-08

So a while back I wrote about how to get Netshare’s tethering functionality without Netshare.  Since the original iPhone I’ve been wondering why no one has created a transparent proxy or router program for sharing the phone’s internet connection.

Finally our friends at June Fabrics have answered the call.  I have been a long time June Fabrics customer, using their PDANet for Windows Mobile editions on numerous phones throughout the years.  Needless to say I was really excited when I saw PdaNet listed on Cydia last week, and couldn’t wait to try it.

Functionality

PdaNet is a true internet connection sharing application.  It allows you to use your iPhone’s 3G or Edge connection with any internet application.  There are no proxies to configure and no need for special tunneling programs.  It connects to your computer using the built in WiFi connection on the phone, and for 3G users allows you to use the internet at DSL speeds.

Milebug - Mileage Log v1.0 | Published by Izatt International | Via App Store | $2.99 | Released: 8-20-08

Overview

Milebug - Mileage Tracker is a nice little app that does one thing really well - keeps track of your mileage.

Functionality

Milebug has a very easy, user-intuitive setup. At the bottom of the main screen, you have three buttons:

Presets - This allows you to setup different A) the businesses that you use the most and B) the vehicles that you use the most. Under “Businesses” you will notice that you can add a business and designate its business type as Business, Charity, or Medical.

Trips - Allows you to create a trip to record your mileage. You will date the trip, specify what type of trip (selecting from your Presets or creating a new type), give your destination and purpose (you can save purposes as well for use with other trips!), designate what vehicle you used and then enter the odometer readings.

Review: noteskinery+

noteskinery+ v1.0 | Published by Hon Cheng Muh | Via App Store | $12.99 | Released: 9-19-08

Overview

The noteskinery+ app markets itself toward organization and GTDers. With a pretty impressive array of options that include creating folders, notes, filing photos, and voice-recordings, it seeks to fill a niche in the app world that is highly competitive.

Functionality

Your first screen will be completely blank. You’ll also be a little confused as the screen title says “moleskinery+” rather than “noteskinery+.” The author responded as to the name change:

I have opted for a name change. The new name will give justify one of the main function of the app, which is ability to skin your notes. More icons will be released.

After you press the edit button, you are presented with an option to add a note or a folder. And that’s where the filing fun begins. It’s all pretty self-explanatory from there. You’ll need to have some idea of what you’re wanting to accomplish from the beginning. The promo image on the iTunes site gives you a good idea of how to proceed, but from there, you’ll obviously want to customize.

Review: CopierciN

CoperciN v0.1 | Published by GomerciN | Via Cydia | Free | Released: 9-14-08

Overview

Holy scissors, Batman! Could it be… Nah. Millions have asked Apple for simple copy-and-paste on the iPhone. There’s no way that a first-time programmer in Objective C beat Apple to the punch… or is there? Gizmodo said it best in their teaser:

So now students are doing your dirty work and besting you, Apple—’bout time for you to jump in this ring, no?

Though copy and paste on the iPhone has been explored before with MagicPad (only works within its notes app) and OpenClip (demise met with 2.1 firmware), CopierciN allows inter-app functionality, but is only available on jailbroken devices.

While CopierciN only offers limited capabilities of copy and paste, it is an impressive and lauded first effort. With CopierciN, you’ll be able to type and paste into a file, an SMS, Mail, or the Notes app while also being able to import text from any of these sources for pasting elsewhere.

Functionality

Admittedly, the creator of the app, GomerciN, says that the app is rudimentary, but you’ll love the ability to finally be able to quickly and easily send common messages over SMS, use it to paste information into Notes or retrieve the information from your Notes and paste it into an email.

Review: Air Sharing

Air Sharing v1 | Published by Avatron Software, Inc. | Via App Store | Free / $6.99 | Released: 9-8-08

Overview

Who says you need to leave your digital fantasy football guide on your desktop? Air Sharing lets you take it with you, by turning your iPhone into a wireless portable drive for easily transporting or viewing files on-the-go. It’s a lot like Datacase, except it’s currently being offered for free.

Functionality

To move files onto an iPhone or iPod Touch, users need to first launch the app, then connect to the device’s web address from a computer (as long as that computer is connected to the same wireless network). There are instructions for doing this in the app’s help tab, but on a Mac it basically involves hitting the “Connect to Server” option in the “Go” menu.

After connecting, users can drop any file or folder into the drive, just as with a USB drive, and can view all iPhone-supported file types, like documents, photos, movies and spreadsheets, without difficulty (our recent review on Datacase touches on many of these same features).
