U.S Apple Stores Now Open at 8 A.M. Due to iPhone 3G Demand

According to Apple’s availability page, all U.S. retail stores will now open at 8:00 A.M. every day (except Sundays) to accomodate the heavy demand for the iPhone 3G. They have also started taking a new approach with the handling of iPhone 3G orders. At the start of the day, the stores will now pre-qualify lined up customers and issue them a raincheck that’s good until 6:00 P.M. on the same day.

This is a much more efficient method as pre-qualified customers can now come back in their leisure time to complete the purchase. But this also means that people will start lining up even earlier in hopes to obtain one of these rainchecks.

We’ve been told that the retail stores receive an iPhone shipment every day, so if you are able to wake up early enough, you should finally be able to get your hands on one. If not, you can always try it again the next day.

Only 24% of Apple Retail Stores Still Have 3G iPhones

More than 75% of Apple Retail Stores that open their doors for business Wednesday morning will be without 3G iPhones. No black or white, no 8GB or 16GB — completely sold out.

According to the 3G Avaiability Tool, only 15 states out of a possible 38 that host Apple locations still have the 2nd generation iPhones for sale. Yes, that means 23 states (for all you non-math majors lazy bastards) are iPhoneless just 6 days after launch.

When 1800 AT&T retail stores sold out fairly immediately upon launch last Friday (with no firm restocking dates set), Apple became the last and only option for iPhone hopefuls. But now that window is closing as well…

The iPhone 3G remains in only 45 out of the 188 Apple locations nationwide. A somber figure if you’re still looking to purchase one, as that number was at 71 just yesterday. Even grimmer still if you had your fingers set on tapping, pinching, and dragging on a 16GB model in black, as only 12 stores in the entire country can fill your need.

See below for a detailed list of stores by state:

United States: New York City AT&T stores are completely sold out, while Apple retail locations may have some left. Reports are also filtering in from around the country that stores are selling out in: Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Seattle, Orlando, Little Rock, Dallas, Topeka, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Ventura, Glendale, Pasadena, Baltimore, Louisville, and others.

Lots of disgruntled-after-waiting-long-hours-in-line iPhone enthusiasts are being turned away with the promise of receiving the long-awaited Apple handset in 7-10 days.

Japan: Softbank, the lone carrier selling the iPhone in Japan, reportedly sold out at three of its Tokyo locations before July 11th via advanced orders. The third largest mobile provider in Japan also reported ~1,500 camping out in front of other downtown stores at opening. Though it’s unsure how many actually received an iPhone before Softbank sold out, the jubilant crowd counted down the final 30 seconds leading up to launch.

United Kingdom: O2 had a limited online sale of its iPhone 3G stock earlier this week in the UK and sold out within hours (amidst some technical issues). Steve Adler, spokesman for 02, said they plan to have more in-stock for their official launch: “We ordered lots. We’ve seen the demand the first time, but we’re even blown away by this demand. I think it is unprecedented.” However, we’ve learned that most (if not all) retail 02 stores have already sold out with only 12-24 iPhones in stock.

We’ll keep you up-to-date as word comes in, we’re constantly updating the above with more cities…

UPDATE: iPhone-Sold-Out-Hysteria has hit California in full force, with Los Angeles and San Francisco AT&T and Apple Retail Stores reporting that they’re out-of-stock.
