mind Wave v2.0 | Published by Jakub Koter | Via App Store | $1.99 | Released: 10-31-08

Overview
Now here’s an app that has left me humming… mind Wave uses binaural tones to induce relaxation, increase concentration or aid sleep! You can find out more information about binaural tones here. Slip on some headphones, fire up mind Wave and listen your way to a different mood or state of relaxation.

Functionality
Launching mind Wave brings you to some instruction screens, one of which urges you to use headphones for the fullest experience. I can vouch for this. Make sure you use headphones. It sounds terrible if you just listen through the iPhone speakers, and you’ll be tempted to immediately delete the app.
Once your headphones are safely tucked into your canals, you’ll see that the app has three main buttons across the bottom: Tones, Timer, and Visual Stimulation.
Tapping on Tones brings you to the list of tones provided with the app which include:
- Study Aid
- Sleep Induction
- Relaxation
- Deep Meditation
- Mental Refreshed
- Coffee
- Creativity Boost
- Focusing Attention
- Weightloss
- Headache Treatment
While I am only a reviewer and am certainly NOT knowledgeable on binaural tones, I would heartily recommend that you not tempt fate and try using “Sleep Induction” while driving.

Path Tracker v1.2 | Published by MarketWall.com | Via App Store | $0.99 | Released: 8-15-08

Overview
Path Tracker will let you monitor the distance, speed and time of any journey, so the next time you go on a zigzagging run through downtown, you can see just how far you’ve gone. It’s also got a host of problems, including power-hogging.

Functionality
Using what looks to be a combination of Google Maps and the iPhone’s GPS capabilities, Path Tracker will show your route, tracking it with a red line.
It calculates useful statistics, especially for those runners and walkers looking for a Nike+ replacement, and can operate while you listen to your favorite Celine Dion jam (it’s a jam if I say it’s a jam).

Absolute Fitness v1.1 | Published by Aqua Eagle | Via App Store | $14.99 | Released: 8-6-08

Overview
Absolute Fitness allows users to chronicle their diets and exercise. While it offers an informative and eye-opening approach to tracking nutritional information against personal daily values and goals, it can be a little unwieldy and may not be appropriate for those with extensive diet monitoring experience.

Functionality
The basic idea of Absolute Fitness is pretty simple—enter your daily food intake and exercise to track your habits and goal progress—but the system has some impressive capabilities and is not as basic as other fitness programs in the App Store.

Brain Challenge v1.3.1 | Published by Gameloft | Via App Store | $9.99 | Released: 7-24-08

Overview
Brain Challenge packs a punch with its exciting combination of mini-games, including logic, math, visual, focus and memory types. With its quality and depth, Brain Challenge is by far the best and most comprehensive mental challenger app that we’ve played, making it worth every penny.

Gameplay
Rapidly solving logic games and responding to memory questions about missing items are great experiences in Brain Challenge.
After gauging your level with a “Daily Test,” the game provides a challenging set of “Brain Training” exercises (they sound much more fun when we call them mini-games) that press you to quickly select answers by touching the screen.

Restaurant Nutrition v1.0 | Published by Foundation HealthCare Network | Via App Store | Free | Released: 7-13-08

Overview
The iPhone is the perfect all-in-one phone, music and media tool, and now, it’s added a new dimension: on-the-go dieter’s best friend.

For some people, dieting is easy. Go to a nutritionist, get a detailed daily meal guide, tote around a detailed food calorie chart. For those of us living on planet Earth, however, it’s more likely that we’ll be grabbing fast food on the go, wondering just what we’re putting in our bodies as we enjoy its fried goodness.

From the publisher’s site: “This is an experimental iPhone application to measure steps as you walk.”
Review
So, we’ve already talked about using the accelerometer in iPhone applications… perhaps the wiser among you wondered: “Hey, can that accelerometer replace sticking a doodad from Nike in my shoe to keep pace while I run? Can I sell my nano I’ve been keeping just for that purpose?
What, you think I’m going to give away the answer to something like that above the fold?
