You may remember Proximi and their MagicPad app we reviewed last month. You might have even seen their user-interface video for system-wide copy & paste. And while all of that was cool and just dandy, the fact remained that copy & paste only remained inside MagicPad itself.

But at iPhoneDevCamp2 just a couple weeks ago, the Proximi team met Zac White, a student at the University of Oklahoma, and all of that changed. Using Zac’s “100% SDK kosher” technique that allows app-to-app copy & paste and Proximi’s user-interface guidelines, OpenClip was born, bringing serious usability to the long-awaited feature-set.

But OpenClip, an open-source, non-profit, collaborative-project, represents a serious call-to-action for iPhone developers. With 6 applications pledging support at launch, developers will need to implement the copy / paste framework into their apps before they’re able to interact with others. In summary: community adoption will be key.

OpenClip could easily see widespread support, especially since Apple has publicly declared the feature to be low on their list of priorities. Regardless, OpenClip actually hopes to become obsolete in the future, realizing that true system-wide copy & paste is not possible without Apple being part of the solution.

Nonetheless, exciting strides are being made, and we’ll keep you up-to-date as more applications jump on board the initiative.

The MagicPad application we demo’d last week is now available in the app store for $3.99. 

Software development house, Proximi, also released a detailed video, displayed above, to showcase how Apple could implement a system-wide solution for copy/cut/paste and other rich text and formatting actions. 

Proximi presented their solution at iPhoneDevCamp over the weekend. We were also told that during the conference they were able to collaborate with other developers, exploring techniques for creating a cross-application clipboard that could be shared by third party-apps.
 
Copy & Paste on the iPhone has been a hot topic since its omission from Apple’s initial iPhone firmware, and especially after its latest 2.0 release.

It will be interesting to note the public’s reaction to MagicPad, and even more interesting to see if Apple decides to implement the same system or something similar in the future. Otherwise, developers might continue to press the issue by building the feature directly into their applications. Either way, it’s great to see companies like Proximi taking the initiative, bringing a true copy & paste candidate to the iPhone.

MagicPad is a rich-text editor that was recently submitted to Apple for verification and inclusion into the App Store. A rich text-editor, the first of its kind for the iPhone, MagicPad allows users to create text documents in which they can change fonts, text sizes, colors, and even add bold, italic, underline, and strike-through effects to their text. After creating their customized memos, users can also email the rich-text notes to themselves or friends.
