The first exciting news from Macworld 2009 came late Monday afternoon when Sling Media PR director Brian Jaquet announced that we will see the much anticipated SlingPlayer for the iPhone by the end of the quarter. If you own a version of their SlingBox set top, this app will allow you to watch live TV, record DVR programs, and even watch recorded films over the air with a 3G or wifi connection. With Pastebud scheduled to launch today, its got me thinking once again about copy/paste on the iPhone. It’s now been a year and a half since the iPhone launched and the lack of copy/paste is still my number 1 pet peeve about my favorite toy.
I watched the Pastebud demo which shows some javascript tricks to let you copy information from a webpage and compose an email from it. I applaud the developers for bringing the missing functionality to the iPhone, it could be very useful, but it is hardly convenient.
Learning more about Pastebud left me longing for more. It reminded me of when I first learned about iCopy many months ago. It’s a pretty creative solution but it doesn’t address the core problem. Today in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I thought I’d write a different kind of article. Rather than trying to figure out what’s coming next for the iPhone or how to make it better, I wanted to look at the product the way it is. Rather than complain about missing features like copy/paste or support for MMS, I want to look at what features this device does have. It may have worked to get quick and dirty information, but the keyword here is dirty.Funky formatting, unloadable images and a truly awful experience that made users gasp, “I’ll check this out when I get home.”Managing email was a nightmare!Mailboxes were constantly full and led to memory management issues.
Thanks mobile Safari for showing me webpages the way they look on my Mac Pro; thanks for giving me a constant experience wherever I go.Mail.app, thanks for taking care of the storage issues, allowing me to easily change between mailboxes, and for formatting my email properly.
Last night while you were probably sleeping Apple released their latest iPhone upgrade. Firmware 2.2 has been highly anticipated ever since developers leaked new features such as Google Street View and the ability to email locations.
We have reported the new features as we discovered them, and here is Apple’s official list of what’s included in the latest and greatest:
