How to: Newbie’s Guide to WinPwn 2.0(.1) Jailbreak

Author: Andrew Robinowitz   |   Posted under: How-Tos
Tags: , , ,

UPDATE (8/09)

New WinPwn now available (2.0.0.4). Will successfully ‘pwn’ iPhone firmware 2.0.1. Firmware links in Step #2 now download iPhone 2.0.1 version.

Download it HERE or HERE.

UPDATE (7/25 12:45 PM)

New WinPwn now available (2.0.0.3)

From the WinPwn page:
“2.0.0.3 fixes the Ipwner crash problem and 16xx errors. It will also fix the iPod ipswBuilder failure bug.”

Download it HERE or HERE.

UPDATE (7/24 1:25 AM)

Step 12 has changed. Make sure to UNCHECK the “Activate Phone” option (it is selected by default) if you have a carrier-specific iPhone that has already been activated. After you restore with the custom IPSW, your iPhone (connected to your PC with iTunes open) will automatically Activate correctly. Otherwise, you will have no carrier information and no signal (** see screenshots at bottom of post).

Thanks to everyone in the comments for their help in resolving this!

Here’s our step-by-step comprehensive guide to jailbreaking your iPhone using Windows, with WinPwn 2.0 (Mac users check our How to: Newbie’s Guide to iPhone 3G Jailbreak, which is a Mac only jailbreaking tool).

This wasn’t quite as easy and intuitive as the PwnageTool 2.0 jailbreak for Mac, so make sure to closely follow the outlined tutorial and proceed with caution and at your own risk!

For reference, we used a 1st generation iPhone, WinPwn v2.0.0.2 (use v2.0.0.3 or latest available), and went for just the jailbreak (not unlock). Make sure you have iTunes 7.7 installed and have your iPhone plugged into your PC.

First off, some starting notes from the WinPwn site:

  • You MUST do a full uninstall of winpwn before installing the new version
  • Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes ( Currently 7.7)
  • WinPwn uses 300MB of ram at peak due to the ipsw being extracted in memory
  • You must first click browse and load an IPSW to use WinPwn (i thought this was clear)
  • For 2.0 only the *5A347_Restore.ipsw files are valid. The 345 image will not work
  • If you see Failed to load image catalog/payload catalog, this is fine and won’t cause problems
  • If you already have service with AT&T do not activate or install Youtube Fix
  • 1. Download WinPwn (latest version) - Currently WinPwn 2.0.0.2 2.0.0.3, 2.0.0.4 (for Apple’s 2.0.1 Firmware) but check WinPwn Site for updates.

    2. Download .ipsw for your iPhone, save to desktop:

    • for 1st generation download (UPDATED: 2.0.1 firmware link) HERE
    • for 3G download (UPDATED: 2.0.1 firmware link) HERE

    3. Run WinPwn .exe and install.

    4. Close readme which automatically opens.

    5. Finish install.

    6. Open WinPwn.

    7. Click ‘Browse .ipsw’ and select .ipsw file downloaded in step 2.

    8. Click ‘IPSW Builder’.

    9. 1st tab, Applications:

    • Cydia - you probably want this if you’re jailbreaking, since you’ll need it to install apps, so check it.
    • YouTube Activation Fix - from the WinPwn Site: “If you already have service with AT&T do not activate or install Youtube Fix,” so I left this unchecked.

    10. 2nd tab, Custom Images:

Here you can set custom images for your Boot/Loading (default: Apple) and Restore (default: dock-connect) screens. You can browse your computer for images, and also the online catalog (unless the terminal displayed “Failed to Load Image Catalog” when WinPwn started up).

Not clicking anything will set you up with the default Apple/dock-connect screens, which is what we opted for…

    11. 3rd tab, Custom Payload:

Most likely you should leave this blank (which we did). In summary, you can add other applications to your install process so you’ll have them on your iPhone right when the jailbreaking process is complete. For instance, if you checked Cydia install in the first tab, you’ve already created a custom payload that will have Cydia waiting on your Springboard upon jailbreak.

You can browse your computer for them (.tar files) or get them from the online catalog (unless the terminal displayed “Failed to Load Payload Catalog” when WinPwn started up).

    12. 4th tab, Advanced:

For this section, just leave ‘Activate Phone’ checked (which is default).

Uncheck ‘Activate Phone’ and continue to next step if you have a carrier-specific iPhone that has already been activated — failure to do this will result in a loss of carrier information and no signal (** see screenshots at bottom of post). Your iPhone will automatically activate itself in iTunes upon completion of the restore.

Unless you are trying to unlock (which we’re not in this tutorial), you don’t need to worry about bootneuter, baseband updates, or bootloaders.

    13. Click ‘Build .ipsw’ in the bottom left.

    14. Click ‘OK’ once you receive the ‘Successfully Created IPSW File’ message.

    15. Now click ‘Ipwner’ button in WinPwn and browse/select the custom IPSW you just created. Click ‘OK’ after receiving the ‘Your Itunes has been Pwned!’

NOTE: If you have tried the WinPwn process and received the 06, 1600, 1601, or 1602 error messages, you probably skipped this step (as we learned the hard way after an hour of frustration).

    16. You’re ready to set iPhone into DFU Mode.

To do this, hold down the ‘power’ and ‘home’ buttons at the same time for ten seconds (turning your iPhone off), and then immediately release the ‘power’ button and continue to hold the ‘home’ button for another ten seconds. Your iTunes should recognize your device and your iPhone screen should be ALL BLACK. If you see the docking screen, you have hit the actual ‘Recovery Mode’ and need to repeat the process until you get the blank ALL BLACK iPhone screen.

    17. iTunes should automatically load and now you must Shift-Restore (hold the ‘Shift’ key on your keyboard while clicking the ‘Restore’ button in iTunes) and select the custom IPSW you just created.

    18. Wait for the restore to take place and complete, wait for iPhone to activate automatically, note Cydia & App Store on your Springboard, and rejoice… congratulations, you’re iPhone has now been pwned!

** Here you see a successful activation (by unchecking “Activate Phone” under the Advanced tab, step 12)…note the upper-left corner with carrier information & bars.

** Here you see an unsuccessful activation by leaving the “Activate Phone” option checked. Note the upper-left corner with 1 bar (alternates with ‘no service’) and lacking carrier information.

You might have to do a restore on your iPhone and use the firmware itunes downloads because I have tried that firmware with no luck and used the firmware itunes downloaded and it finally worked and I got no errors.

@Chris Very interesting, though when we were receiving errors (1600 & 1602) we tried all of the troubleshooting you suggested (including setting in DFU mode, restoring straight from iTunes firmware, setting in DFU mode again, restoring with custom IPSW) to no avail. Then we realized we needed the Ipwner step…

@Anthony & Jamie: you guys need to find the latest IPSW for your iPOD touch, should be “ipod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw”
@Spanky: what exact part of the restore process is it hanging on? restore can take a while, but ours hung on the “Preparing iPhone for Restore” mode while the iPhone showed an all white screen and had to be restarted.

First time success with 2.0.0.2 (the previous version 2.0.0.1 did not work).

Restore of contact etc after jailbreaking *does* take a long time — a quick websearch indicates this may be a known iTunes bug, just be patient it works.

@minh: we’ve successfuly WinPwn’d two iPhones, one has regular signal strength while the other has 1 bar/no service. we are looking into it…
@s: if you’re in DFU mode you should be able to use a regular “Restore” and download 2.0 firmware directly through iTunes to get on a clean slate and start over.
@jinhoe: yes, you should be good to go if you’re looking to unlock your iPhone. if you receive error 6 during the WinPwn process, make sure your iPhone is in DFU mode and not Recovery mode.

      hello,

I’m in Japan using a 3G iphone on softbank. The iphones in japan all come witha little custom application that runs in the background and pops up a green box saying “you have new mail” (in both English and Japanese) when you receive a message. Its quite handy as it gives a “semi-push” notification without the need for an exchange or .me account. If I do this process I assume that this little program will be lost? (It must be in the firmware I guess because it is not visible in setting or apps or anywhere and it displays Japanese even though my phone is running in English)

Anyway If I try an pwn and then I find either a) I have no signal strength or b) that app is missing Can I easily just restore my phone back to the way it is now with a RESTORE from backup?

hi andrew, i’m applying the technique above on ‘not activating the iphone’ and restoring the phone now. Hopefully once that finishes, and I ‘register’ the phone again everything will be okay. If not I guess I’ll have to revert back to the standard version 2 software. My question though is I’m in Australia connected to the vodafone network. Before this restore, I couldn’t find any ‘carrier’ information (i.e anything relating to Vodafone). Is there going to be problems even if I roll back to the standard 2.0 at a later time? I’m worried my carrier settings have been lost.

@Steven: In the US we are connected to AT&T. Don’t be concerned yet, I am quite sure that if the current method doesn’t work (automatically activating to Vodafone through iTunes) that a fresh restore should.
@lee: you are NOT in DFU mode (but Restore mode), read #16 above… and make sure you did Ipwner step as well.

Not sure which I’m more bummed about… The fact that I was 3 hours early and got stuck with no signal OR the fact that I got Cydia to work and noticed that there really isn’t anything there yet… Huge bummer.

I’ll go back to 2.01 until there are some apps under Cydia.

i guess ‘nearly’ everything is fine. At the moment I’m updating the packages in cydia, supposed to be about 3.7mb. It’s taken like 10 mins so far, I got a really fast internet connection. At the moment my screen on the iphone has that ‘preloader’ circle in the centre and at the top I can see my carrier/signal strength, wireless icon and time. Has anyone else had the same thing happen to them in regards to cydia?

@steven: You can do plenty with Cydia (though maybe not right now). Check out our Cydia 2.0 vs Installer 4.0 comparison from yesterday. In a nutshell. Cydia lets you install 3rd party apps just like Installer, but there aren’t many yet because they need to be recompiled for 2.0 firmware. As developers do this, you’ll see them appear in Cydia and have the ability to install them.

      Guys,
follow the steps but be patient. It can take over 10 minutes to do a restore.
The restore has to load and then verify.
If you are connected and previously activate to a carrier, use I-Tunes to do the activation and un-check the Activate option.
I have just done my I-Phone 3G and am connected to O2 here in the UK. It installed Cydia and the logo screens with no problems.
If you have already have a profile setup in I-Tunes, you can restore this to the phone which will install all your previous downloaded apps.
You may end up having to sync some of your stuff again (such as music) depending on your settings in I-Tunes.
Remember, pwning is just doing the firmware at this stage (unless you install apps, which I don’t think is working with Winpwn).

Steve if you are looking for jailbreak their are other tutorials out there…(this one covers unlocking the 3g without JB).
I suggest putting the att sim in it and updating to 1.1.4 (it should not matter), however, by doing that you are decreasing the amount of troubleshooting needed if something were to go wrong.
next with the 2g iphone you will select activate phone and you will need to download and install the old bootloaders (3.9 & 4.6).
like i said you are looking at the wrong tutorial i suggest:

@ lee, the issue I was referring to was from the poster above you (mayank). As far as your issue, I’m not an expert. My only thought is that when you created the custom firmware, you left the “activate” box checked off on the advanced options. If that’s not the case, maybe there’s some way to reactivate your phone through iTunes? Sorry I can’t be of more help.

No problems on the O2 signal, it was always dropping down to one bar here inside the house and now I can see 2 ok, then jumps up when on a call etc.
To be honest, there is not a lot you can do with the phone even though it is jailbroken as a lot of the apps have not been ported to the 2.0 firmware. That said, you can at least have a play around and have the custom logo’s which are just a way to be unique from 90% of the I-Phones out there. Plus it may make you feel warm and fuzzy inside if/when you show your friends …

I agree with Knivezxx, if you cannot even perform basic computer functions and cannot read fully through the tutorial, then why even try this … makes you pretty stupid if you do.

Just to clarify on what I did, for those of you who can read and follow steps in order. This is for a phone that is on a contract in UK with O2, AND was already activated and fully functional in the first place.

      1. Downloaded and installed winpwn 2.0.0.2 AFTER un-installing 2.0.01.
      2. Created a IPSW directory under the winpwn installation directory and downloaded the “3G iPhone 2.0 5A347″ Firmware, to this directory, from iClarified. If you cannot find it with google, then stop reading here and go outside and play with a bus or a car in the middle of the road as you should not be here …
      3. Shut down I-Tunes if open (should be version 7.7 installed)
      4. Plugin I-Phone to computer and start winpwn.
      5. Browse to the directory you saved the IPSW in, and select this file. Do this by following the guide above (which in my mind, is very easy to follow). The other greyed out buttons will now be available.
      ———————————
The next steps involve customising the IPSW you just loaded above.
      ———————————
Make sure your phone is connected by this stage, as it is required to build the new IPSW you are about to create.

      6. Pressed the ‘IPSW Builder’ button and made sure the option ‘Install Cydia’ is checked AND ‘Active Phone’ was not. I did not have the ‘U-Tube Activation Fix’ checked either as there was no problem with my U-Tube on the phone in the first place. So no check on that.
Clicked the ‘Use Custom Pictures’ as I thought they looked cool, and I like to be different I guess.
      7. When I was satisfied with the options selected, I pressed the ‘Build .ipsw’ button. When prompted I placed this file to be created in the same directory as the one I download.
      8. Went and watched ‘The Unit’ on TV whilst the building of the custom IPSW took place.
      9. When this process was finished I made sure that I-Tunes WAS CLOSED.
      10. Pressed the ‘iPwner’ button and waited for it to complete and pop-up the message that I-Tuned was pwned. This did not take that long from memory.
      11. Closed down the winpwn program.

** Now note, you need to have I-Tunes closed for the next step **

      12. Held down the Power and Home keys (whilst phone still connected to computer) until the phone shut down and went to black screen. You will notice that a screen showing ‘Slide to Power Off’ (or words to that effect) appear, but continue hold the keys till the screen goes black.
      This takes about 10 seconds.
      13. When the screen goes black, let go of the Power key BUT keep the home key pressed. Wait about another 10 seconds until the computer pops up a info message that a new device has been found (like when you plug in a USB device ….). This will say that a DFU device has been found, when this happens you can let go of the home key.
I-Tunes will now launch on its own, one the computer catches up after recognising the DFU device (which is what you phone is now being seen as).
      14. Click ok to the I-Tunes info message. Then whilst holding down the shift key press the ‘Restore’ button, and navigate to the custom IPSW you created above.
      15. Follow the prompts and let the process begin.

      ** Now be patient **

At this stage I went and got breakfast, and watch some more of ‘The Unit’. Great show that, glad they are playing re-runs here …

This process takes time, and you will see the new logo (if you installed it into the IPSW) and a status dial on screen turning. ** Again, leave it alone and come back later **

I think it took a good 10 minutes to load and verify the restore.

The phone then will re-boot and re-connect to I-Tunes. I may have unplugged and re-plugged the Phone after the flash to get I-Tunes to recognise it.

      16. As I had my phone backed up, I chose to restore the profile (not new user) I had saved.
At this stage I went and had a shower (I was stinky - had a loong night at the pub), it took a while to fully restore all the stuff I had on the phone including the Apps I had already installed.
Once I-Tunes had done its stuff, I had to re-sync my music due to the settings I have in I-Tunes.

Job done - no issues. All the old Apps work, and even managed to update the Cydia files.

I followed all the instructions and it went great, managed to sync back all data and everything was working, except for my phone service. It kept showing up without bars. I tried with and without the “Activate iphone” setting in Winpwn, same with both. So it seems I have to wait some more time before things work… Seems more ppl has this problem (Lee just above with O2 for one).

      I have a question:

When I first got my iPhone, I got a new phone number (call it #1). Then I decided to port my old phone number (call it #2) over to AT&T, which overwrote the phone number I originally got (#1). My current number is #2. So if I go through this process, after activation, will my phone have #1 or #2 associated with it? It should have #2 (which is what I want). I just want to make sure before I pwn and get my original number (#1) back somehow.

Also after flashing for some time iPhone could not catch the net and was showing no servise, I was about to flash it again but then noticed that network was back. So give it some time after flashing.

am I missing something blindingly obvious here? I create the fimware and install it fine, but my phone is now locked?? Emergency calls only. On vodafone in the UK so phone was previously unblocked with Bootneuter…does this mean I need to tinker with the advanced / activate tabs? Or am I screwed?

      Yes
Otherwise I-Tunes will be the source of activation.

I did everything and now while trying to restore, I got stuck with 1601 error. My Iphone is in DFU mode.. I have no idea how to make it ’snap’ out of it.. LOL… I’m not panicking.. I can just restore it back to 114 but is there anything I can do to get that bloody 2.0?

I’m with ATT and did NOT checked the youtube fix, however, there is message that “you must connect to iTunes with a internet connection to enable you tube”, does that mean I still need to check the youtube fix?

Also, if I don’t checking the activate phone, it will not work for me.

@seezee: does your carrier information appear in the upper-left?
@elie: make sure you didn’t skip any steps (i.e. pwning iTunes before restore) and also ensure you were in DFU mode not recovery mode. if all was good, try switching USB ports.

t o 150: Try doing it again with “activate phone” checked. It works for me though.

Plus don’t know why but if I checked the “youtube fix” at least it won’t give me the “must connect to iTunes …” thing. I’m with ATT

Guys, is unchecking activation just for ATT subscribers or for everyone? (Just checking) and Andrew, iPhone is in DFU :( and I got the iTunes has been pwned msg before proceeding…and switching USB ports didn’t help…
      sorry to bother u :(

Is there any way to boot out of DFU mode w/o restoring?

ok, im done now, it works now, thats what i did on windows vista:

everything like descrbing above :p… I unchecked youtube fix, and i unchecked everything in advanced mode, thats its, after that i clicked on ipwnd, then i tunes was pwnd, i started itunes, put my iphone on usb, i had still my iphone on, then i pushed powerbutton and homebutton together for 10 seconds, then realeasing the powerbutton but still pushing the homebutton for another 10 seconds, after that my iphone went black, then the pupup on itunes ”popped up”, clicked ok, then holding shift and clicking restorebutton, then opening the ispw i made with winpwnd thats it!

now, i am waiting foe some replacement sources in ydia for like 15minutes, how long does that take?

Hey, just wondering if this has worked for anybody so far…

I accidentally upgraded my first gen 8GB 1.1.4 iPhone last night to 2.0, and it relocked itself I believe. I just get redirected to an emergency call option now… so does that mean it’s been relocked? Or is it bricked? I’m confused with the terms. Help!

I am the least tech-savvy person to have graced the earth so I’m hoping this hack should do the trick! Does this hack unlock and set me back to 1.1.4? Because that’s all I want right now…

      Thank you

@ray: in step 10 of the tutorial, are you selecting a custom image or using default (nothing selected)? also, the firmware you are using is for a 3G.
